That would be the three things if I was a “trap god” that I would change right now.  I think the two yard reduction that the ATA gives to everybody but not everybody got it was just because they wouldn’t make mandatory reductions.  You had way too many 27 yarders over handicap and then with the point system you had new shooters who were being punched who have no chance to win because you’re throwing so easy a target right now.

I mean, there was no way when I was 25 years old that a 57 year old guy was going to beat us back then.  The birds were harder. Look at international.  Everything else gets tougher.  We make our sport easier.

Look what they did to bowling.  Used to be a 300 was rare.  Now they’ve done something with the balls, put the groove in the middle, now club bowlers bowl 300. That’s not what the sport was about.

iTrapshooter.com: They tried to make it easier to appeal to more people, thinking it would make it more popular and it’s not working out?

Brad:  Yeah, the quick deal was, out west is a lot easier targets then back east. Because of the altitude, the visibility.  When you shoot back east it’s lower altitude, trees, wind. Visibility is bad.

So generally when you came to Vandalia, the guys from back east were getting an easier target and the guys from out west were getting a harder target.  You had the shooters like Frank Little, Kay Ohye and Russo.  When I lived in Maryland I shot Vandalia better than I ever did when I lived in Ohio because I shot tougher targets all summer.

Well, the guys that come from out west they had a disadvantage because they were shooting easy birds then got on hard targets.  Faster.  That and worse visibility.  So their solution was, they just tried to make it easier and easier and easier and it’s just backfired.

They’ve driven the money shooter out of the game because there’s no money.
You know, trapshooting’s down to 20,000 people.  20,000 active.  There was 80,000 when I was shooting.  How long will it last at those numbers?   Seventy-five percent in ten years.  Now their philosophy is we’ll make it easy and we’ll get the 40 people that are there to shoot more targets.
